Kindo tests Freerice.com
16 Nov 2007The web-site www.freerice.com has been up now for a month. The idea is simple: A word-game where you try to guess English synonyms and for each right answer, the web-site donates 10 grains of rice to the United Nation food program paid by the advertising.
From the website:
FreeRice has two goals:
1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free. This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site.
So far, over 2 billions grains (*) have been donated… A bag of rice available in the supermarket must contain thousands of grains and doesn’t cost more than a pound - so mayby direct donations from people would probably be more effective.
But this is simple and easy to start with so why not checking the site out. It’s thrilling to see the bowl getting filled as you play around for some minutes!
(*) If a rice grain weighs 25 milligrams, the amount collected so far would correspond to around 50 tons according to my calculations and estimations.
