That’s not an easy question! So what’s a power user on Kindo?

I’d personally classify a power user as someone who has both added most of their family to Kindo, and then planted seeds within their family to get everyone with an email address into Kindo so they can all join in the fun. Obviously since families are different all over the world, there’s no “number” which indicates a power user. Some people may have 20 people in their family, but 15 them are using Kindo. Others may have added significantly more profiles but they are the only one in their family with a Kindo account.

Anyways, we figure that Kindo power users are the best to talk to about what features make Kindo really useful. So it’s our aim and intention to get to know our power users better so that we keep it real. If you think that you’re a Kindo power user, please feel free to get in touch with us, or add a comment to this post below, to talk about what you’d like to see on Kindo in the coming months.

Probably the number one feature request for Kindo, over and above better deleting of profiles in the family tree, is for photos. We always knew that would come, so I’m pleased as punch to say that we’re working on it, and hope to release the first iteration of Kindo family photos soon.

That said, I would like to know if there are any specific photo features that Kindo users would like to see, apart from the usual features you’d find on any social service that enables you to store photos (creating and viewing albums, uploading photos to albums, commenting on both, tagging photos; are the basics).

For example, here are some ideas that have been flying around the Kindo office of late:

Send photo as digital postcard - imagine sending that photo of your wedding / family event to your family easily

Add to your favourites - imagine having a list of all your favourite photos of your family

Let people outside my family tree see my photos - imagine being able to allow your close friends to view your photos without them having to log in

Being able to crop/move/rotate photo’s - imagine being able to do stuff to your photos in the browser so they look better

Viewing some stats - imagine being able to see how many people viewed your albums / photos, and what photos are most popular

Anyways, these are just some ideas, and are pretty much influenced by what is already out there.

We’d like to build stuff that people will use a lot, and enjoy using, so it’s really important that we get some feedback from you guys to understand what’s really important to you!

So, please comments in this post - what do you want to see in a photos feature??

My Mom promised a while ago to do a guest blog on Kindo… so here it is in full:

Here is your Ma’s blog for Kindo as promised …

“This is the real value of Kindo as I see it … At a certain level Kindo is providing an invaluable vehicle for families to connect, chart their growth through different generations and subsequently keep in touch. Being fresh and fun it is completely in step with contemporary sensibilities which perhaps accounts for its growing international success, however, at a far deeper less mundane level, by activating the “glue” that keeps families and hence societies together, Kindo is helping to counter the disruption of our culture which is in the throes of a great Change. By reinforcing our personal identities within the bulwark provided by our families, Kindo is helping each of us to withstand the effects of the human dissension and societal disintegration that mark a global community in transition. This is important work!”

Since going live on the 22nd of October, people from all over the world have been trying Kindo. Personally, it’s been an amazing journey as we’re able to see what countries people are joining Kindo from, and thus how Kindo is growing.

As of today, the number of countries Kindo users are in has grown to 116

Probably the most interesting and exciting country so far is China - since we’ve launched, the number of Chinese users has steadily increased, which is awesome - so we’ve got one or two surprises up our sleeves for them in the coming months.

Similarly, I’ve personally been really surprised at how active South African users have been. We all know how small the South African internet population is, so it’s been encouraging from that point of view, but it also shows how spread out South Africans are around the globe… We need more Afrikaans users though!!

So, for interests sake, here’s a list of the most popular countries, in no particular order:

Italy

Austria

Germany

United Kingdom

Sweden

China

United States

France

South Africa

Spain

In summary, Kindo let’s you login, create a profile (all very easy to do - the barrier to entry is negligible) and begin to add family members to your network. You have the option of sending them a mail to let them know you added them, thereby inviting them to contribute their personal body of knowledge to expanding the tree. What an awesome way of mapping your genealogy! For me, it’s the most meaningful application of social technology I’ve stumbled across yet.

Thanks Mike, really hope you and your family enjoy it, and help us to build something meaningful for you.

We’ve had a few people asking us for blog widgets to put something Kindo on their blogs, so here’s our first
It’s super simple - just an image and a link, and we hope people will share the love and spread it around…

You can grab it from the source of this page, or alternatively, we’ve added a zip file for you to download and then copy/paste into your blog…

Here you go:

And here’s the zip file:

Kindo blog widget zip file

Oh, and if you’re asking what widgets come next, we’d love to have your suggestions (we’ve got our own ideas, but we’ll try do the ones most requested first) - after all, Kindo is for you!
