Kindo launches in Hindi

17 Jul 2008

The Kindo team is proud to announce that we are now available in ‘Hindi’ which is amongst the most widely spoken languages across the world. We have also become one of the first social network in Hindi at all.

The successful Hindi launch is a collaborative effort of our dedicated translation & development team members who have worked to ensure the smooth rollout. So far no social network has paid much attention to Hindi, but for Kindo it was an easy choice. Hindi is among the top 5 languages spoken in the world, with over 500 million native speakers, 330 million in India alone. Of India’s Internet users, 44% prefer Hindi to English on the net.

Nils Hammar said, “We’re excited about this launch”. “We believe Internet access and usage will grow among Hindi speakers over the next few years, and that many Indians will want to use the service in their mother tongue. Apart from connecting typical Indian homes, Kindo will provide great assistance to families of many Indians who are based all over the world. Kindo is meant for all generations so it’s Important to make everyone feel at home.”

For Indians, the family is central to the daily life, which is another reason why Kindo decided to launch in Hindi.

To make this release a reality, the translation team has looked towards multiple issues like installation of the correct fonts-package on operating systems (Windows & Mac), cross-browser compatibility with Hindi (Mozilla Firefox and IE). The structured approach to ensure high quality involved the usage of multiple translation interfaces like google’s indic and translate engine.

Kindo features on digital content blog

19 Jun 2008

The Kindo Team is glad to inform you that we’ve been covered on the ‘digital content blog’ which is part of Guardian newspaper’s online avtaar guardian.co.uk.

Excerpts from the article:

“Kindo was started in April 2007 and went live that October; the idea is a family communication service built around a family tree. The service is backed by some well-lnown characters from London’s start-up scene including Saul and Robin Klein at TAG - the guys behind Stardoll, Lovefilm and Moo, amongst others - along with Last.fm’s first investor Stefan Glänzer and ASI, the investment firm started by Skype’s founding engineers.”

What about your mum?

11 Jun 2008

mum contact pollHave you voted already about how often you are in touch with your mum? If not, do so now, it will only take a second. You scroll down a bit, you’ll stumble upon the poll in the right sidebar (looking like that pic here), tick on the right radio button and click vote. And don’t cheat ;-)

By the way: You can see the results as well, by clicking on the small results button below the vote field. Any you can start comparing it to the results in other languages, like Russian for example where the preliminary results are very different already.

We are looking forward to the final analysis in the next weeks!

Anna-Karin's Genealogical Podcast

16 May 2008

EmigrationAt the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th, around 1.3 million Swedes emigrated to North America. This means for genealogists, that there still are an enormous amount of connections over the Atlantic ocean, and that many English speaking families are eager to trace their roots, e.g. back to Småland, the region in south-eastern Sweden where the writer Vilhelm Moberg’s fictionous characters in “The Emigrants” first had their home.

One enthusiast is Anna-Karin, a Swedish lady who regularly during the last years has broadcasted Anna-Karins Genealogical Podcast, a podcast on genealogy from an emigrant perspective! Her program contains interviews, tips on genealogy sources and material and genealogy news. The interesting thing is that the program is in English, which makes it possible for her to reach out all over the globe. The Kindo family likes her podcast and recommends it for everyone interested to learn more. - The next episode will come shortly, she promises!

By the way, if you like her podcast, it has now been nominated to the Swedish “Podcast of the year“-award - a competition held by the web-agency Daytona. Vote here! Participating in the competition is also the Web 2.0 podcast What’s Next, which in November hosted Kindo! (only in Swedish)

Kindo at the CeBIT in Hannover

11 Mar 2008

cebit green villageThose of you who follow our German blog as well might have read that I have been at the CeBIT - the worlds biggest IT fair - last week. We had invited some bloggers for free drinks, but not many people made it at that time… Among the guys I met during the fair were Sascha (Riesenmaschine) (writes on the official CeBIT blog as well), Fabian, Christian, Maciej from Poland or Brian (Chip) from India and lots more.

The focus of this years cebit was on green technologies in information technology. Though I wrote on awgi.de that the actual fair didn’t really justify this choice.

It’s been a great experience, lots of inspiration, interesting people and new tech-stuff, and you can find more detailed post about it here (english here).

BTW: Bloggers got free entrance to the CeBIT, hence saving the 30-something Euros.
