Your mum - How often do you talk with her?

15 Apr 2008

Telefon kobra
When we’ve built a site for families in 14 different languages, we can see how much of the most important things in life are similar for us humans all over the word: Strong family ties, the way we gather for holidays, how food has a central role when we meet up etc… Still though, there are small funny details that vary a lot. See for instance the blog posts from last December, when Kindo users from all over the world contributed with stories how their families celebrated the season’s holidays.

When we earlier launched our Family-Polls here on the blog, it was because we were curious to see if there were other similarities or differences between countries. The first poll was about how geographically spread out our families are. Now for a while, a new one has been up. This one is about a very important person - our mums!

How often do YOU call your mother? Maybe she is the one that calls you… Maybe even a bit too often? :) Click here in the poll a bit down here on the right side, and you’ll be part of the unique international poll.

The result will be up in some weeks!

This is how international today's families really are

28 Feb 2008

Families with relatives abroad statisticsYou might have voted yourself or read about the poll on our blog. We gave it some more weeks and an astonishly 1600 people gave us insights into their family’s situations. And the results are stunning.

A vast majority of families is actually international! 54% of the families on a global level have relatives living abroad. So probably many of those, who moved to another country, got to know another culture and maybe even learned another language. If you are a bit lofty and emotional you might say: This is freedom.

It definitely is an indication for the globalization that doesnt only happen on an economic level, but on a personal one as well. It is the time of international exchange and understanding and Kindo wants to foster that.

Here are some more of the results in details:

  • In total it’s more than half of the families that have relatives living outside their homecountry
  • 61% of the British and 68% of the American families are spread out beyond their countries
  • Russia has very international families with 76% having experienced family members to move outside the country.
  • Turkey seems to have very local families and only 32% have family members outside Turkey.

That’s the most interesting stuff. As you can see, we have put some more data in graphs, so it’s easier to understand.
geographical spread of families
All the votes were analyzed by location of the user – we got them from 54 different countries – and language, so to determine nationality we used a mixure of those two criteria. It’s not been a study with scientific entitlement, which makes the great results even more astonishing.
If you do scientific research in this field don’t hesitate to get in touch, maybe we can set up some more detailed undertakings in the future.

By the way: We have made a press release (pdf) out of that as well ;-)

Tatataaaah. And the Winner is...

How international is your family? – Last chance to vote

17 Jan 2008

More than 500 readers have voted already! We never expected this kind of response. Just in case you havent answered yet, this is the last chance to express yourself about these questions:

  • How far is your family spread out geographically?
  • Do your close relatives live across national or even continental borders?

Just tick the respective bubble in the sidebar on the right and click on “vote”. The votes are anonymous! Just as you are used to, your privacy is very important for us at Kindo.

And very soon we will analyse the results and share the interesting bits of it with all of you.
I am already looking forward to that.

New UK Family Statistics

21 Nov 2007

families-17.jpg

A new report, Focus on Families from National Statistics (where else?) states among other things that:

  • The most healty people are the ones that live in a partnership relation.
  • London has the highest proportion of single parents in the UK - 22% of all families compared with 13% in certain other areas.
  • The biggest families are still in Northern Ireland, where 25% of the families has three or more children - compared with 18% in UK in total.

The first conclusion is quite interesting. Do people in partnerships simply have healtier habits or is it the relationship itself that gives these effects, what do you think?

NEW: Vote on family topics and enjoy results from all over the world

19 Nov 2007

voteLast weekend we introduced a poll feature in the right sidebar of our blog. Our first question is about the geographic spread of your families. Think about all the relatives you know of: Do they all live more or less in the same neighbourhood, or are you spread through your cities, countries, continents or even in the whole wide world?!

So check the sidebar and participate! Tell us about your family situation and look forward to the international comparison of the results. We will unveil cultural differrences and clean up with stereotypes. Are the French more global than the Germans? And do Spaniards really clump together in one neighbourhood.

From now we will introduce new questions every now and then. If you have a family question you always wanted to know how the families in the world feel about, just send it to us, or put it here in the comments!

Kindo in 116 countries and growing

12 Nov 2007

Since going live on the 22nd of October, people from all over the world have been trying Kindo. Personally, it’s been an amazing journey as we’re able to see what countries people are joining Kindo from, and thus how Kindo is growing.

As of today, the number of countries Kindo users are in has grown to 116 ;-)

Kindo users around the world

Probably the most interesting and exciting country so far is China - since we’ve launched, the number of Chinese users has steadily increased, which is awesome - so we’ve got one or two surprises up our sleeves for them in the coming months.

Similarly, I’ve personally been really surprised at how active South African users have been. We all know how small the South African internet population is, so it’s been encouraging from that point of view, but it also shows how spread out South Africans are around the globe… We need more Afrikaans users though!! ;-)

So, for interests sake, here’s a list of the most popular countries, in no particular order:

  • Italy
  • Austria
  • Germany
  • United Kingdom
  • Sweden
  • China
  • United States
  • France
  • South Africa
  • Spain

    Kindo usage in South Africa

    8 Nov 2007

OK, so South Africa is not the biggest internet market in the whole wide world, but I love it, and it’s deeply rooted in my psyche and my memories. But, thanks to lovely Google Analytics, we’re able to check out where people are using Kindo in South Africa…. and as you can see from the image below, it’s roughly in the following areas, most to least:

Pretoria, Cape Town, Rosebank, Johannesburg, Bramley, Auckland Park, Durban, Midrand, Parow, Centurion

    Kindo in South Africa

What I want to know is, “Wie die blerry hell is op Kindo in blarry Parow!

Keep ‘em coming folks, we’ve got so much more for you… ;-)

Something to put on your blog ;)

    8 Nov 2007

We’ve had a few people asking us for blog widgets to put something Kindo on their blogs, so here’s our first ;-)
It’s super simple - just an image and a link, and we hope people will share the love and spread it around…

You can grab it from the source of this page, or alternatively, we’ve added a zip file for you to download and then copy/paste into your blog…

    Here you go:

Kindo is where families get together, build their tree and grow. Get started now!

    And here’s the zip file:

Oh, and if you’re asking what widgets come next, we’d love to have your suggestions (we’ve got our own ideas, but we’ll try do the ones most requested first) - after all, Kindo is for you! ;-)
